As I see it the hoarding of btc goes against the principal of their becoming the basis of an alternative monetary system.

I am inclined to surmize that may have been the reason why someone calling himself 'bitcoinmillionare' supposedly gave away $13,000 worth yesterday which triggered the plunge.  My view is that he may be a believer from the early days and wished to see it back at its normal trend values.

The problem with gold, silver and other commodities that are used as hard currencies or stores of value is that they can be manipulated.  

I remember that Bunker Hunt and his sheik pal tried to corner silver back in the 70s but when the price reached its peak everyone in the Indian sub-continet went and got their little pot of silver rupees out from under their beds and the price crashed. The speculators lost billions.
